Call the number on your screen

A Mysterious Stranger from Arizona shares the following:

When I was a kid, I of course watched TV and inevitably saw commercials. You know how it would say "Call the number on your screen"? I, until age twelve, thought that meant you had to transform your television screen into a mysterious telephone, and actually call the number, ON your screen.

I had a similar experience when I was about six. The TV said, "We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please stand by." I thought this actually meant that I was supposed to stand by the set. So I did, for like 10 minutes, until my brother came in and laughed at me.

In my defense, sometimes standing next to the set really did make the reception better.
