Thunder and Lightning

Until earlier this year (I'm 27), I thought lightning and thunder were two completely different things. I thought lightning didn't have a sound and thunder was invisible.

Wait, what? Thunder and lightening ARE two different things, aren't they? Can't there be thunder without lightening and sometimes lightening without thunder? I'm confused.

I don't beleive that thunder without lightning is possible. You may not see the lightning, but it happened somewhere to create the thunder.

You may also see lighting far enough away, or with atmospheric conditions that the thunder never reached you. Look up "heat Lightning".

Thunder and lightning ARE two different things. Lightning DOESN'T have a sound, and thunder IS invisible. You're still stupid.

I was so confused for a couple of minutes, like "wait.. what?? But but.." now I am happy though, as I see I am still okay in the notion that lightning and thunder are two different things.

From the clouds to a nearby tree or roof, a lightning bolt takes only a few thousandths of a second to split through the air. The loud thunder that follows the lightning bolt is commonly said to come from the bolt itself. However, the grumbles and growls we hear in thunderstorms actually come from the rapid expansion of the air surrounding the lightning bolt.
